Volunteering cancelled at Madeira Drive green wall

Volunteering cancelled at Madeira Drive green wall

Unfortunately green wall maintenance has been stopped again, as Covid-19 restrictions continue.

The council don’t allow volunteers over 70 years old to work at present, and of course as of today not in groups over 6. Our mighty Green Gym guys and gals fail on both counts…we hope they are keeping active and connected to each other in other ways.

It’s a tough decision. Parts of the green wall are now growing onto the pavement, so Building Green has asked the council to organise some cutting back.

We look forward to restrictions lifting and work starting up again as soon as possible.

Major funding announcement for Madeira Terraces

Jax Atkins from the Save Madeira Terraces campaign has announced the Council budget committee’s decision this week to contribute £13.4 million to the restoration of Madeira Terrace.

This is fabulous news – it’s not the total budget required, but with the architect and design team about to be established, a committed bunch of local people involved in advising the Council, and the good work already done to fundraise in the community and protect the Madeira Drive green wall, we should see some progress at last!

Building Green represents the environment sector on the advisory committee. If you have concerns or questions you would like us to raise on your behalf, get in touch.

New shoots at Madeira Drive

The first new shoot has appeared growing on the newly transplanted Japanese Spindle. Fingers crossed they all spring to life this Spring!

And thanks to the Council, new guidewires have been installed to help these and other recently coppiced Spindle plants re-establish and grow up the cliff.

Seen here – the old Victorian guide wire tensioners…and the modern stainless steel version (hopefully even longer lasting).
